Backstory…
“I LOVE MOUNTAINS”
If you’re reading this, chances are that you do too.
For those of us who live, play, laugh, and even cry in the mountains, it’s impossible to ignore the impact climate change is having on our playground. I’m writing this from Chamonix Mont-Blanc, where just minutes ago, I heard news of another massive serac fall on the Glacier des Bossons at the foot of the Aiguille du Midi. Heart-wrenching.
Rising temperatures are having an irreversible effect on mountain environments. Depleting snowfall in winter, disappearing glaciers in summer.
It’s no longer a distant warning. It’s happening…RIGHT NOW.
One of the biggest contributors to Climate Change? ROAD TRAVEL.
We’re not naive, people will not stop driving altogether. But what if we, as a community of mountain lovers, took responsibility and do what we can to reduce our impact?
MOUNTAIN RIDESHARE
A project was born from my necessity…
As a student chasing snow, I constantly needed to find affordable ways to travel from London to Chamonix, or anywhere near the Alps, when a snowstorm was on the horizon.
What started as a money-saving mission evolved into something much more meaningful. Unlike general carpooling platforms, Mountain Rideshare is built by mountain people, for mountain people.
It’s a rideshare platform specifically for skiers, snowboarders, climbers, bikers, hikers, and other mountain enthusiasts traveling to, from, and between ski resorts and mountain areas.
WHY MOUNTAIN RIDESHARE?
Because community matters.
Unlike general carpooling platforms like BlaBlaCar, Mountain Rideshare is built specifically for the mountain community. Skiers, snowboarders, climbers, hikers, mountain bikers, and adventurers who live for the outdoors.
It’s not just about getting from A to B it’s about sharing the ride with people who get it. People who know what it’s like to chase powder at first light, climb before sunrise, or spend a weekend deep in the backcountry.
By focusing on this community, Mountain Rideshare makes it easier to find others headed to the same slopes, trails, and peaks; with the same destination, mindset, and stoke.
Since launching the original version of the site, Mountain Rideshare has created over 2,475 carpools, connecting mountain lovers from the UK, France, Switzerland, Austria, the United States, Canada and even Japan.
Not bad for a mostly solo project, right?
PICKING IT BACK UP
I launched Mountain Rideshare in 2009 and updated it in 2012 out of love for the mountains.
Like many passion projects, I had to put it down to focus on surviving and making a living.
I watch the Glaciers of Chamonix continue to melt faster than ever and the world is on fire.
The need to reduce human impact on the world is more apparent by the day.
This gives me the motivation to revive and re-develop Mountain Rideshare with a a new level of design maturity, business focus, and purpose. I owe it to the mountains that have given me so much.
It’s no longer just a project… IT”S A MISSION!
